Alfie (100 minutes)
My alternative title would be: What's It All About
SUPER MOVIE FAN'S RECOMMENDATION: 2, WAIT AND RENT
Who is in it?:
JUDE LAW, MARISA TOMEI, SUSAN SARANDON
What is it about?
JUDE LAW is Alfie; a serial womanizer who evolves into a sad, selfish egotist as he conquers a variety of women through is access as a limo driver. He finally meets a woman who will not stand for his philandering (MARISA TOMEI). She is a single mom with a great kid. Can she straighten out the crooked Alfie?
When and Where does this movie take place?
This is an updated version of the 1966 movie with MICHAEL CAINE and SHELLY WINTERS. This is a current times story.
Why see it? This is a great, "wait and rent," Wayne. Telling in places and funny in others, Alfie is a good but not great movie. LAW is good as the bad boy but this movie lacks enough relevance or insight to say to you, "go see it." Wait a couple of months and then rent it.
How about the kids?
Rated "R" for sexual themes and drug use. Not for kids.
Video Pick of the Week
Before Sunset
is a really good movie I missed the first time around, Wayne. This takes place nine years before Before Sunrise (1995). ETHAN HAWKE and JULIE DELPY star as a couple who had one amazing night that he writes a book about and then nine years later he looks up and there she is at a book signing. Trouble is he's on a flight back home shortly. They stroll the streets of Paris. This is an adult dialogue movie you'll like a lot, Wayne.
Next week, we'll review, The Polar Express with TOM HANKS. Based on the amazing children's story of a boy whose faith in Santa's existence gets him the ride of his life. This looks like a journey we'll all want to take.
John Fischetti can be heard Friday's on the Wayne Perkey show on Oldies 103, WRKA and can be reached at fischettij@uncw.edu
