Be Cool (114 minutes)
My alternative title would be: Oscar Mayer
SUPER MOVIE FAN'S RECOMMENDATION: 1, FOGGEDDABOUTIT
Who is in it?:
JOHN TRAVOLTA, UMA THURMAN, "THE ROC," DANNY DEVITO, VINCE VAUGHN, CEDRIC THE ENTERTAINER
What is it about?
A sequel to Get Shorty, Be Cool, revives the character of Chili Palmer (JOHN TRAVOLTA) a Miami loan shark who ends up a movie producer. Now Chili is into the music business. He gets involved in helping a singer get away from a group or Russian mobsters or something like that. Along the way, there is an assortment of cameo appearances, gay and racial jokes and a dance scene with UMA THERMAN (a widow of Chill's friend) and TRAVOLTA) a la Pulp Fiction.
When and Where does this movie take place?
L.A.
Why see it? Don't. It is totally forgettable, Wayne. I was worried from the preview that would be a movie where the whole gang knows they're in a movie and they are making jokes to an L.A. in-crowd that exists somewhere, but not in Louisville. It doesn't work on almost every level. DEVITO, who can be brilliant, comes up short in his guidance of this movie. Be Cool turns out to be bad.
How about the kids?
PG-13 for violence, sensuality and language including sexual references.
Video Pick of the Week
N/A
Next week, we'll review, Robots, a computer generated movie starring the voices of EWAN MCGREGOR, HALLE BERRY, ROBIN WILLIAMS, MEL BROOKS and GREG KINNEAR. It takes place in a world made up entirely of robots. It looks really cute and funny.
John Fischetti can be heard Friday's on the Wayne Perkey show on Oldies 103, WRKA and can be reached at fischettij@uncw.edu
