The Brothers Grimm (118 minutes)
My alternative title would be: Who's on first?
SUPER MOVIE FAN'S RECOMMENDATION: 2, Wait and Rent
Who is in it?:
MATT DAMON, HEATH LEDGER, MONICA BELLUCCI
What is it about?
The Brothers Jake and Will (DAMON and LEDGER) have become famous for their ability to spin magic and to take care of fraud. They are, in fact, con artists in 1796 Germany who are going from town to town ripping people off with their wild tales of magic. When Napoleon's army discovers their rue, they are not sent to jail, but rather to a village that may indeed be haunted by bad demons in the forest. There are constant references to the many, many stories they are later known for.
When and Where does this movie take place?
Germany in 1796.
Why see it? This is a rambling, confusing set of visual stimuli, Wayne. I can't recommend it and what I wrote above makes more sense of this thing than it deserves. The idea is really cute. TERRY GILLIAM directs (from MONTY PYTHON fame) and this is a rambling, chaotic non-story.
How about the kids?
PG-13 for some suggestiveness and frightening scenes, most kids will be bored
Video Pick of the Week
The Station Agent is a 2003 movie that is really well done. It is a simple tale of a man who is a dwarf and his lonely life after the death of his friend, the owner of a miniature train collector's store. He moves to an old depot and there he starts to meet some kind people who are looking for connectionsand a couple of rednecks who want trouble. You and your wife will really like this movie. PETER DINKLAGE stars.
Next week, we'll review, The Constant Gardener with RALPH FIENNES, about a man who is trying to figure out why his wife has been found dead in Africa and realizes that the truth is shockingly close to home.
John Fischetti can be heard Friday's on the Wayne Perkey show on Oldies 103, WRKA and can be reached at fischettij@uncw.edu
