Crash (100 minutes)
My alternative title would be: We Can't Work it Out
SUPER MOVIE FAN'S RECOMMENDATION: 3, SEE IT
Who is in it?:
DON CHEADLE, SANDRA BULLOCK, MATT DILLION, JENNIFER ESPOSITO, WILLIAM FICHTNER
What is it about?
All of our lives intertwine--like the people you passed in the infield at the Oaks or today on the Watterson Expresswayyou see people and you make generalizations based on stereotypes. What assumptions do you make when you see a person from a certain ethic group on the street or at the mall? Crash tells the story of the lives of people from very different cultures and backgrounds who have little in common except racism. When they interact, they let their true, honest prejudices rule and it isn't pretty. This is directed by the screenplay author from Million Dollar Baby, PAUL HAGGIS, and it has the same intelligence.
When and Where does this movie take place?
L.A.
Why see it? Many of our listeners go to the movies to escape, not necessarily to learn or to change. Crash strikes us right up side the head with poignant honesty and brutal cruelness. Our society seems always on the edge, particularly in L.A. and maybe Crash can help us deal with the default negative assumptions that different people have of one another. Crash is very intense, very angry and VERY GOOD.
How about the kids?
Serious "R" for language, sexual content and violence. No kids.
Video Pick of the Week
Racing Stripes. Fresh off the Derby is a cute movie about a zebra that grows up as a race horse. Many Kentucky references this one will be loved by the kids. Lost of famous voices talk for the animals.
Next week, we'll review, Monster-in-Law with perhaps the most unlikely paring of JANE FONDA and JENNIFER LOPEZ.
John Fischetti can be heard Friday's on the Wayne Perkey show on Oldies 103, WRKA and can be reached at fischettij@uncw.edu
