Hero (116 minutes)
My alternative title would be: Intuition
SUPER MOVIE FAN'S RECOMMENDATION: 4, MUST SEE IT
Who is in it?:
JET LI and a wonderful Chinese cast.
What is it about?
China's first Emperor, Chen Daoming, united China and built the Great Wall about 2,200 years ago. Trouble is that there were warlords in each province who were not happy about the unification of China. In three separate attempts on his life, Chen is saved from assassination by the same mysterious hero. When he comes before the Emperor to claim his unsolicited bounty, several versions of the story unfold. Is he the hero whom he pretends to be?
When and Where does this movie take place?
China, 2,200 years ago.
Why see it? This is a thrilling movie, simultaneously rich in history and fable. I am so impressed with the rich detail and story-telling. It doesn't get better than this, Wayne. What an adventure. Released in China in 2002, this is the number one grossing movie in Chinese history. Take that Titanic. And the fight scenes are as they were in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragona masterpiece of choreography.
How about the kids?
PG-13 for martial arts violence. Subtitles make this a problem for little ones.
Video Pick of the Week
Laws of Attraction
PIERCE BROSNAN and JULIANNE MOORE star as two divorce lawyers who are made for each other. Trouble is, they can't stand one another. A good date night movie when you're too lazy to get up from the couch, Wayne.
Next week, we'll review, REESE WITHERSPOON in an 1820s period piece, Vanity Fair. How does a poor girl make it out of the lower class in London?
John Fischetti can be heard Friday's on the Wayne Perkey show on Oldies 103, WRKA and can be reached at fischettij@uncw.edu
