Hotel Rwanda (124 minutes)
My alternative title would be: Extended Check-Out Time
SUPER MOVIE FAN'S RECOMMENDATION: 4, MUST SEE
Who is in it?:
DON CHEADLE, DJIOMON HOUNSOU, NICK NOLTE, SOPHIE OKONEDO, JOAQUIN PHOENIX
What is it about?
In 1994, a civil war in Rwanda led to the death of one million people while most of the world was not paying attention. The Hutus killed the Tutsis based on a long-standing legacy of hatred created during European colonization. DON CHEADLE plays Paul Rusesabagina, hotel manager who takes the situation into his own hands when the whites flee. He lets over 1,000 people stay on the grounds of the hotel while the United Nations peacekeepers watch over the situation without taking military action. This is a horrible chapter in world history and I am embarrassed, Wayne, that we didn't know about and do more at the time.
When and Where does this movie take place?
In Rwanda in 1994.
Why see it? This is an important story of hope in the midst of horror. The Rwandan civil war reminds us of how much the people of the world need to look out for one another. The acting is amazing and the story is so important that we must see it so we might prevent another atrocity.
How about the kids?
PG-13 for violence and disturbing images. This is a history lesson and kids over 12 should see it.
Video Pick of the Week
The Motorcycle Diaries is the story of an Argentinean medical student who travels across South America and becomes a leader of change. A surprising and powerful movie.
Next week, we'll make our Oscar picks, Wayne. Let's see how I do.
John Fischetti can be heard Friday's on the Wayne Perkey show on Oldies 103, WRKA and can be reached at fischettij@uncw.edu
