What is it about?
Jarhead is about the painfully dull parts of war, particularly in the first Persian Gulf War. Based on the 2003 Anthony Swofford book by the same name, Jarhead is about boys becoming men and being boys. After the Iraqis give up so quickly in Desert Storm, many Americans are left to "protect" or "keep the peace" in the hot desert with not much they are empowered to do. This is in many ways a movie that is so different than most action-oriented war movies. There are no big battles, no action to speak of. This is a different kind of war and a different kind of war movie.
When and Where does this movie take place?
The Persian Gulf in the first war.
Why see it? Jarhead is a compelling and unique story about the new kinds of warfare that are new to this era. It is a story of bored men and a tough situation.
It is a movie that helps us see the kinds of obligations America has put herself in. It isn't much on action and most will find it odd and a bit dull. However, for a "realistic" portrayal of the non-glamour that is war and for this kind of seemingly purposeless duty, Jarhead is important. Sometimes you know Wayne, I like movies that teach us something about things we don't know enough about but should. Jarhead does that about warfare in the Gulf.
How about the kids?
No kids, Rated "R" for violence, language and sexuality.
Video Pick of the Week
Edward Scissorhands is one of JOHNNY DEPP'S finest performances and is now out on DVD. I recommend this to you, Wayne. This romantic fantasy is a classic and DEPP is brilliant.
