Shall We Dance (95 minutes)
My alternative title would be: PEEK-A-BOO
SUPER MOVIE FAN'S RECOMMENDATION: 3, SEE IT
Who is in it?:
RICHARD GERE, JENNIFER LOPEZ, SUSAN SARANDON, STANLEY TUCCI
What is it about?
John Clark (RICHARD GERE) is missing a spark in his life. He is genuinely happy with his family (SUSAN SARANDON is his wife) and his job, but that old groove his missingthat is until he spots Paulina (JENNIFER LOPEZ) from the Chicago "L" elevated train he takes to commute to work. Paulina is a dance instructor. Taken with Paulina, John takes a risk and signs up for dance classes and later decides to enter a major dance competition. His wife hires a private investigator to see if John is having an affair.
When and Where does this movie take place?
Chicago.
Why see it? This is a truly romantic "Hollywood" flick. A good date movie, it is an "old fashioned" escape into the lives of people on the screen. The minor characters almost steal the show, especially TUCCI, who plays a co-worker of John's who has a secret side. GERE is good. The only thing that doesn't quite work is his relationship with LOPEZ. She isn't a great actress and the lack of spark in their relationship keeps this from being really good. Worth seeing. Have fun.
How about the kids?
PG-13 for suggestiveness and language. Not for little kids.
Video Pick of the Week
Hellboy
is a comic book story that I missed on the big screen but this is a really good movie, Wayne. Wild action and fascinating characters make this a great rental for anyone interested in chronicling how special effects govern our movie making.
Next week, we'll review, Surviving Christmas. Not only do all the drug stores have their holiday merchandise out, Hollywood is really getting ahead of itself with the first holiday movie of the year. BEN AFFLECK plays a man who asks the people who now live in the house he grew up in to take him in for the holidays so that we can relive his fond memories. Boy is that a mistake.
John Fischetti can be heard Friday's on the Wayne Perkey show on Oldies 103, WRKA and can be reached at fischettij@uncw.edu
