Sin City (126 minutes)
My alternative title would be: Harsh World
SUPER MOVIE FAN'S RECOMMENDATION: 3, SEE IT (but not Wayne)
Who is in it?:
BRUCE WILLIS, BENICIO DEL TORO, MICKEY ROURKE, JESSICA ALBA, ELIJAH WOOD, CLIVE OWEN
What is it about?
Somewhere in the past, present or future is Frank Miller's dark "Sin City," a comic book, or should I say graphic novel, brought to the big screen with incredible life and excitement. This is three stories in one about the good guys who are the bad guys and the bad guys who are the worse guys. This is a series of stories that tell of people who have gotten into deep trouble and dig the whole even deeper. The women are depicted as if the writer is a teenage male, with images of women mostly in provocative situations.
When and Where does this movie take place?
A variety of locations in the U.S. and the crime takes place in Las Vegas. I won't spoil where they are being held captive.
Why see it? This is so visually stunning a movie, so well made and so intriguing that I recommend it for the movie making rather than the story. I am impressed with that aspect of the movie but I am afraid this isn't your kind of flick, Wayne. So I recommend it for comic book fans and those who study movie-making but it is a serious "R."
How about the kids?
Very "R" No kids.
Video Pick of the Week
Sideways was not my favorite of the Oscar nominees, but I recommend you rent it for the excellent acting and to see if you agree with me that this celebrates guzzling and cheatingwhich aren't characteristics we need to celebrate.
Next week, we'll review, Fever Pitch. Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon star in a story involving romance and the Red Sox.
John Fischetti can be heard Friday's on the Wayne Perkey show on Oldies 103, WRKA and can be reached at fischettij@uncw.edu
