The Island (136 minutes)
My alternative title would be: Mirror Image
SUPER MOVIE FAN'S RECOMMENDATION: 3, SEE IT
Who is in it?:
EWAN MCGREGOR, SCARLETT JOHANSSON, STEVE BUSCEMI
What is it about?
EWAN MCGREGOR is Lincoln Echo Six a smarter than-the- average resident of an institution that is very eerie. Unknown to Lincoln and his colleagues is the reality that they are clones waiting to be used for their organs by their biological "parent/twin." Once he stumbles on the truth, Lincoln decides to escape with Jordan Two Delta (SCARLETT JOHANSSON). Then the movie switches it into high gear.
When and Where does this movie take place?
Later on in the 21st century at an institution.
Why see it? The Island is really two movies. The first half is a cerebral look at the characters and their predicament. Great computer effects and pretty good acting. The second half is a set of chase scenes strung together. The story has major holes but the effects and acting are good enough to lean this to a "see it." Since cloning may be one of the top subjects of this century, some interesting issues are revealed heremostly ducked in favor of the imagery. I love JOHANSSON'S future, Wayne.
How about the kids?
PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, some sexuality and language.
Video Pick of the Week
Up and Down. This is a Czech movie about a couple who can't have children, he because of his criminal past can't adopt and his wife can't conceive, so they work out a plan to buy a baby from some bad guys. Meanwhile there is a wacky family reunion taking place. For international movie fans, this is a good one to try.
Next week, we'll review, Must Love Dogs, a romantic comedy about a second turn at relationships with DIANE LANE and JOHN CUSACK.
John Fischetti can be heard Friday's on the Wayne Perkey show on Oldies 103, WRKA and can be reached at fischettij@uncw.edu
